A cliff with a story

Kekar Monying, meaning "black rock", is a tall cliff above the Siang near Rottung village, about 47 km north of Pasighat. It is one of the most important places in Adi history. In late 1911, after the killing of a British officer and his party, a large British expedition moved up the Siang valley. Adi warriors held them back at Kekar Monying for weeks, using the cliff, stone traps and traditional weapons, in what became the last of the Anglo-Abor wars.

Why it matters

For the Adi, Kekar Monying stands for courage and resistance. It is remembered in songs, stories and local commemorations. Visiting with someone from the area who can share this history turns a viewpoint into something much richer.

The views

From near the cliff, you look over the Siang valley, with the river winding between forested hills. On clear days, the views stretch a long way up and down the valley.

Getting there

The drive north from Pasighat takes around an hour and a half on a winding road. Ask a local driver or guide who knows the site, as signposting is limited. Roads can be damaged by landslides in the monsoon.
