The climate

At about 150 metres, Pasighat is far warmer than Arunachal's hill towns. Summers are hot and humid. The monsoon, roughly May to September, brings heavy rain. Winters, from November to February, are mild and pleasant, with cool mornings and evenings.

What to pack

  • Light clothes: cotton or linen shirts, loose trousers and breathable fabrics for warm days.
  • Rain gear: a light waterproof jacket or poncho from April to September.
  • A layer for winter: a light jumper or jacket for December and January evenings.
  • Sun protection: a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, especially on the open sandbanks.
  • Insect repellent: mosquitoes are common, especially near the river at dusk.

River days

For rafting or boat trips, wear quick-dry clothes and water shoes or sandals that strap on. Cotton stays wet and gets cold. Bring a dry bag for your phone and a change of clothes.

Village visits

Modest clothing is respectful. Take off your shoes if you are invited into a home.

Adi dress

Adi textiles are bright and striped, often red, black, yellow and green. Women wear a wrapped skirt called a gale with a blouse and beads, and men wear woven jackets or shawls with cane hats at festivals. At Solung and Aran, you will see traditional dress everywhere, along with the ponung, a dance performed by women in a circle. Handwoven cloth is sold in Pasighat's market; buying from local weavers supports the craft.

Footwear

Sandals are fine for town. For Kekar Monying and village walks, wear closed shoes with grip. See Pasighat photo spots.
