Local tips
Leave Puri by 6.30 am to be on the water before the heat and wind pick up.
Book the boat at the official counter at Satapada jetty rather than from sellers on the road.
Ask the boatman to cut the engine near the dolphins and keep a respectful distance.
Carry a hat, sunscreen and water; there is no shade on most boats.
Bring binoculars or a zoom lens; dolphins surface only briefly.
Wear sandals you can get wet at the sea-mouth sandbar.
Try crab curry at a Satapada restaurant before the drive back.
Satapada, the Puri side
Chilika is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon, and the part most Puri visitors see is Satapada, on its eastern edge near the sea mouth. It is about 50 km from Puri by road, roughly 90 minutes each way. Most people go as a morning trip.
The boat trip
At Satapada, boats are run by local associations from the jetty. A standard trip goes out to where Irrawaddy dolphins feed, then on to the sea mouth, where the lagoon meets the Bay of Bengal, with a stop on the sandbar beach. Boats should cut their engines and keep their distance near the dolphins, and there are limits on how many boats can gather at one time. Sightings are brief: a grey back and a small fin, then gone.
Timing
Go early. The water is calmer and the light is softer, and dolphins are often seen in the morning. In the monsoon, boats may be cancelled in rough weather.
Birds are elsewhere
Satapada is not the best place for Chilika's winter birds. The big flocks gather at Nalabana, in the middle of the lagoon, and near Mangalajodi on the northern shore, between about November and February. From Puri, those are much longer trips.
Staying longer
To see Chilika properly, with Kalijai island, Rambha's hills and the bird sanctuary, you need a night or two on the lagoon itself. See the Chilika city page for that version.
Food on the way
Satapada's lakeside restaurants serve crab and prawn from the lagoon.
