Local tips
Leave Puri by 6 am to reach the temple soon after it opens.
Take the Marine Drive rather than the inland road, and stop at Ramchandi on the way.
Hire a licensed guide at the ticket counter to decode the carvings.
Wear a hat; there is almost no shade in the temple courtyard.
Skip Friday if you want to see the ASI museum, which is closed that day.
Book a round-trip taxi from Puri rather than relying on buses back.
Visit in early December to catch the Konark Festival in the evening.
A half-day up the coast
From Puri, Konark is about 35 km north-east along the Marine Drive, a road that runs between casuarina forest and sand dunes with glimpses of the sea. By car it takes under an hour. Most visitors from Puri go in the morning and are back for a late lunch.
Why leave early
The temple opens around sunrise, and the first two hours are the best. The sandstone is still cool, tour buses from Bhubaneswar have not arrived, and the low sun throws the carved wheels into relief. By 11 am the courtyard is hot and crowded.
What you are going to see
Konark was built in the 13th century as a chariot for the sun god Surya, with 24 carved wheels along its base and a team of stone horses at the front. The main tower collapsed long ago; what stands is the great audience hall, the jagamohana. It is a ticketed UNESCO World Heritage Site run by the Archaeological Survey of India. The ASI began removing sand from inside the hall in 2026, so parts may be under scaffolding. Hire a licensed guide at the gate if you want the carvings explained.
Stops on the way
- Ramchandi temple: where the Kushabhadra river meets the sea, about 7 km before Konark.
- Chandrabhaga beach: about 3 km past the temple, quieter than Puri's.
- Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary: the casuarina forest the road runs through.
Making a day of it
Add the ASI museum by the temple, closed on Fridays, and lunch at Konark before heading back. For a longer stay and the Konark side of things, see the Konark city page.
