Golf on a hill meadow
The Ranikhet golf course lies at Upat, about 5 to 6 km from town on the road to Almora. It is a nine-hole course laid out on a wide, gently rolling meadow at about 1,800 m, ringed by pine forest. It is often called one of the highest golf courses in Asia. The army, through the Kumaon Regiment, looks after it, and the grass is kept in fine condition.
Who can play
The course is mainly used by army officers, but civilians can usually play too, on payment of a green fee. Clubs and caddies can generally be arranged at the club. Playing hours can be limited and may change for army use, so ask at the club or at your hotel before you plan a round. Some visitors say play is allowed only in the morning; confirm on the day.
For non-golfers
Even if you do not play, the meadow is a lovely open space on a ridge that is mostly forest. You can usually walk on the edges and paths, but keep off the greens and fairways when games are on, and watch for flying balls. There is a small old clubhouse building on the course. Remember it is an army facility, so follow any instructions from the staff.
Kalika
A few kilometres further along the road is Kalika, a small settlement with a Kali temple among the pines. It makes a short, quiet add-on.
Getting there
Take a taxi or shared jeep on the Almora road. The course is right beside the road, and it pairs well with an afternoon at Majkhali, further along the same road.
Photography
The open fairways against the pines make good pictures, especially in late light. Do not photograph army staff, vehicles or buildings nearby.
