Chase clear mornings
The snow peaks are the prize here, and they hide easily. From October to December the air is usually clear from dawn to mid-morning. In May and June haze from the plains often softens them to a faint outline. In the monsoon they may vanish for weeks. Plan your mountain shots for the first hours of the day and keep afternoons for forests and temples.
The peaks from Majkhali and Chaubatia
Majkhali, on the Almora road, faces the Trishul massif across a deep valley, and at dawn the snow turns pink before the ridges below catch the sun. The viewpoint at Chaubatia Gardens gives a similar sweep, with rows of fruit trees in front. A zoom lens helps both, because the peaks are far away.
Bells and forest
At Jhula Devi, the brass bells hang in layers along the railings and eaves. Get close and shoot along a row so the bells run into the distance. The forest walk down to Bhalu Dam is all tall pines and cedars, and the water is at its stillest early in the day.
The golf meadow
The Upat golf course is one of the few big open spaces on the ridge. Pines frame its edges, and the light is best late in the afternoon. Stay off the greens and away from players.
What not to photograph
Ranikhet is an active army cantonment. Do not photograph gates, sentry posts, barracks, army vehicles, parades or soldiers on duty. Photography is not allowed inside the regimental museum. Drones are not allowed near the cantonment. If you are unsure whether a building is military, assume it is and turn the camera away.
Seasons in the frame
Apple and peach blossom fills Chaubatia in spring, usually March and April. Fruit hangs on the trees in late summer. In some winters, snow dusts the pines for a day or two after a storm, but it rarely lasts.
Questions
Ranikhet — FAQ
When can I see snow peaks from Ranikhet?
Clear views are most likely from October to December, and on crisp mornings after rain. Summer haze and monsoon cloud often hide the peaks.
Is it allowed to fly a drone in Ranikhet?
Not near the cantonment, which covers much of the ridge. Flying near military areas is restricted in India, so leave the drone packed.
Which peaks can I see from Majkhali?
Mainly Trishul, with Nanda Devi and other peaks of the Kumaon Himalaya on clear days. A zoom lens helps, as they are far away.
When does Chaubatia blossom?
Usually in March and April, depending on the year. Fruit ripens later in the summer.
