Local tips

Start from the Chaubatia side and save energy for the steep climb back.

Walk in daylight and head back well before dusk.

Carry water and snacks, as there is nothing to buy at the dam.

Wear shoes with a good grip; the path is slippery after rain.

Tuck trousers into socks in the monsoon to keep leeches off.

Do not swim or wash in the water, which is a drinking water source.

Take all your litter back up to Chaubatia.

A lake in the forest

Bhalu Dam is a small reservoir in the forest below Chaubatia, about 3 km from the orchards. The British built it in the early 20th century to store water, and it still supplies drinking water. Tall pines, oaks and cedars stand around it, and the only sounds are birds and wind. It is one of the calmest places in the Ranikhet area.

Getting there

Most people walk. A path leads from near the Chaubatia gardens down through the forest to the dam. It is about 3 km each way, and part of it is steep. Going down is easy; coming back up is harder, so allow about an hour for the return climb and take breaks. There is no shop on the way.

What to do there

This is a place to sit, picnic, watch birds and enjoy the quiet. Some visitors mention a small boat for hire at times, but do not plan your trip around it. Do not swim or wash in the water, since it is a drinking water source. Take all your litter back with you.

Staying safe

The forest here is home to wild animals, including leopards, which are rarely seen but present across Kumaon. Walk in daylight, preferably in a small group, and start back well before dusk. After rain the path is slippery and can have leeches. Mobile signal is patchy.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant. In the monsoon the forest is lush but the path is muddy. In winter the woods are cold and the shaded sections of the path can be icy in the mornings.

Nearby

Start with Jhula Devi and Chaubatia Gardens, then walk down to the dam.
