Local tips
Carry an original photo ID, as you cannot pass the Air Force checkpoint without it.
Be ready to leave your camera at the gate, and ask the guards whether phones can be used for photos.
Check before you set out whether the viewpoint is open, as it is reported to close on Wednesdays.
Go in the morning, before cloud rolls over the hills and hides the city.
Pick a clear day between October and March for the chance to see the plains to the south.
Bring a warm layer, as the wind at the top is much colder than in town.
Treat the summit shrine with respect, as the hill is sacred to many Khasi people.
The highest point in Meghalaya
Shillong Peak rises to about 1,965 metres, the highest point in the state, and sits about 10 km from the city centre. From the top you look down over Shillong spread across its hills. On clear days you can see far south towards the plains of Bangladesh.
A sacred hill
For the Khasi, this is more than a viewpoint. Local tradition links the city's name to the deity Lei Shyllong, and the state tourism site describes a small shrine to U Shulong at the summit, where rituals are held in spring.
Inside an Air Force station
The peak is inside an Indian Air Force radar station, so you pass a security checkpoint to reach the viewpoint. Carry original photo ID. The state tourism site says cameras must be surrendered at the gate, and in practice the rules on photography have varied, so ask the guards and follow what they say. At busy times the security check can take a long while. Several travel sources say the viewpoint is closed on Wednesdays, and hours are daytime only; check before you go.
The viewpoint
There is a viewing deck and a coin telescope, plus a few stalls. Expect wind and a cold edge to the air, even in spring.
When to go
October to March gives the clearest views. In the monsoon, from June to September, fog often covers the peak for most of the day. Go in the morning, before cloud builds. Elephant Falls is on the same side of the city and fits into the same trip.
