Local tips

Stop at a viewpoint on the Guwahati road on your way up from Guwahati rather than making a separate trip.

Go in the morning for mist on the water, or in late afternoon for softer light on the pines.

Check which boats are running when you arrive, as water sports depend on weather and season.

Stay in the boat and wear the life jacket you are given; the lake is not for swimming.

Keep a jacket handy, as the breeze off the water feels cold even on sunny days.

Park only in marked pull-offs, as the highway is busy and the bends are tight.

Carry your rubbish away with you, because litter and silt already harm the lake.

A reservoir in the hills

Umiam Lake is not a natural lake. The Assam State Electricity Board dammed the Umiam river in the early 1960s, and the first power station here began producing electricity in 1965. It was the first storage hydroelectric project in north-east India. The water now fills a long, winding valley between pine-covered hills, about 15 km north of Shillong. Many people call the area Barapani, meaning "big water".

Seeing it from the road

Most visitors see the lake first from the Guwahati–Shillong road, which runs along the lake's edge. There are several viewpoints and pull-offs, some with tea stalls. If you are coming up from Guwahati, stop on the way in, when the light is often softer than on the way back.

On the water

Kayaking, pedal boats and motor boats are on offer at water sports points by the lakeside. What is running depends on the weather and the season, so check on the day. It is a boating lake, not a swimming lake.

Weather and light

Morning mist often lies on the water in the cooler months, lifting by mid-morning. In the monsoon, low cloud can hide the far hills. On clear winter afternoons, the sun drops behind the hills and the water turns silver.

A lake under pressure

Silt and pollution from the growing city are a known problem for the lake, and the water level changes through the year. Take your rubbish back with you.
