About Chandratal

Chandratal, or Chandra Taal, means "moon lake", a name that comes from its crescent shape. It sits at about 4,300 m in the upper Chandra valley. Most travellers visit it on a Spiti trip, but it actually lies in Lahaul, on the Manali side of the Kunzum Pass. The lake is a protected Ramsar wetland, and its water changes from turquoise to deep blue as the light moves across it.

A side road leaves the Manali–Kaza road near Batal and ends at a parking area about 1 km from the lake, from where you walk. The road is only open in the summer season, usually from around June to early October. Camps are set up at a distance from the shore, and a night there gives you some of the clearest star-filled skies in the Himalayas.
