Local tips

Visit in the morning or late afternoon for soft light on the crag and the valley.

Walk slowly up to the old monastery, as the steps are steep and the air is thin.

Respect any areas that are closed, as the old building is fragile.

Take off your shoes before entering the prayer rooms.

Ask before taking photos inside the monastery.

Do the Dhankar Lake walk only if you feel well acclimatised, and carry water.

Combine Dhankar with Tabo or the Pin Valley on the same day.

About Dhankar Monastery

Dhankar Monastery sits at about 3,900 m on a steep crag of eroded rock above the point where the Pin river joins the Spiti. Dhankar was once the capital of Spiti, and the old monastery and the ruins of the fort beside it look down over a wide stretch of the valley. The gompa belongs to the Gelugpa school and is around a thousand years old.

The old building is fragile, and a newer monastery has been built in the village nearby. Most visitors come for the view as much as the monastery. A steep path climbs from the village to Dhankar Lake, a small high-altitude lake about 1–1.5 hours up on foot, longer if you take it slowly. The monastery lies on the road between Tabo and Kaza, so it fits easily into a day trip.
