About Key Monastery
Key Monastery, also spelt Ki or Kye, is the largest monastery in Spiti Valley and the image most people picture when they think of Spiti. Its white buildings climb a cone-shaped hill at about 4,100 m, above the Spiti river and about 12–14 km from Kaza. It belongs to the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism and is said to date back around a thousand years, though it has been damaged and rebuilt several times.
Inside, narrow passages lead to prayer halls with murals, thangkas and old texts, and young monks study here. The best view of the whole monastery is from the road below, where it rises above the valley floor. Key is also close to Kibber and other high villages, so it fits well into a half-day trip from Kaza.
