Temples in Tiruchirappalli

Trichy is one of the great temple cities of Tamil Nadu. Within a few kilometres you can visit one of the largest working Hindu temples in the world at Srirangam, a Ganesha shrine on top of a giant rock, and one of the five great Shiva temples linked to the elements.

These are busy, living places of worship. Dress modestly, expect to leave your shoes at the gate, and follow the rules on photography and entry at each temple.

Famous Temples in Trichy

Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam is dedicated to Vishnu as Ranganatha, lying on the serpent Adisesha. It is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world, with seven concentric walls and 21 gopurams. The main entrance tower, the Rajagopuram, is about 73 m tall. Non-Hindus can visit the outer courtyards but are not allowed into the inner sanctum.

Rockfort Temple sits on a huge rock in the old town. A long climb of rock-cut steps leads past the Thayumanaswamy shrine to the Ucchi Pillayar Temple, a small Ganesha shrine on the summit with wide views of the city and the Cauvery.

Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval is a large Shiva temple close to Srirangam. It is one of the five Pancha Bhoota temples and represents water, with a spring that rises in the sanctum. Its long pillared corridors are some of the most beautiful in the region.

Trichy is also known for Our Lady of Lourdes Church, a neo-Gothic church in the city, which is worth a visit alongside the temples.
