Best time to visit Vaishali

October to March is the season for Vaishali. The ruins are open ground with no shade, so the cool months make the difference between a pleasant day and a punishing one.

October to March: the season

October is warm and dry after the rains, and the fields are green. November to February brings cool, clear afternoons and cold, often foggy mornings — in December and January fog can hang over the plain until late morning and delay trains and flights into Patna. Plan a slightly later start in those weeks. March warms up fast, and Holi falls in March.

This is also when Buddhist pilgrims from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar and elsewhere come through on the Bodh Gaya–Rajgir–Kushinagar circuit. Groups arrive by coach, and the memorial stupa and peace pagoda get busy around midday.

April to June: hot

By May, daytime temperatures on the Bihar plain often cross 40 °C, with dry, dusty winds. If you must come, be at Kolhua when it opens, see the central sites before 11 am, and rest indoors after lunch. Carry more water than you think you need.

July to September: monsoon

The rains turn the land deep green and fill the ancient tanks, which look their best now. But north Bihar is flood-prone: the Gandak and other rivers can overflow, and village roads may be waterlogged. Check local news before you travel. The monuments stay open, but brick and grass get slippery.

Dates to plan around

  • Mahavir Jayanti (March or April) — Jain pilgrims gather at Basokund, and the state's Vaishali Mahotsav is usually held around it.
  • Buddha Purnima (April or May) — prayers at the stupas.
  • Chhath Puja (October or November) — trains into Bihar are packed; book well ahead.
  • New Year and winter holidays — the memorial stupa draws very large crowds.
