What's on in Vaishali

Vaishali's calendar follows two religions and one river. The biggest local event, the Vaishali Mahotsav, marks Mahavira's birth; Chhath fills the ghats near Hajipur each autumn.

Nothing dated is confirmed for Vaishali right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.

The year in Vaishali

Vaishali packs most of its outdoor calendar into the cooler months; the pre-monsoon peak is hot enough that daytime processions are genuinely hard going. Broadly, Oct – Mar is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.

Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Across Bihar

Chhath Puja

🗓️ October–November

Four days of riverbank ritual at sunrise and sunset, the most important festival in the state.

Planning: Trains into Bihar are booked out weeks ahead — this is the largest annual migration in the region.

Nationwide

Diwali

🗓️ October–November

The biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.

Holi

🗓️ March

Coloured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.

Navratri and Dussehra

🗓️ September–October

Nine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.

Eid al-Fitr

🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each year

The end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal

🗓️ mid-January

The harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

Vaishali Mahotsav (March or April)

The state holds the Vaishali Mahotsav around Mahavir Jayanti, the birthday of the 24th Jain Tirthankara, which falls on the 13th day of the bright half of Chaitra. It runs for a few days with folk music and dance, craft and food stalls, and cultural programmes near the ruins. In 2022, for example, it ran from 14 to 16 April. The exact dates, and whether it is held in a given year, are announced by the district late, so check news from the Vaishali district administration before you plan around it.

Mahavir Jayanti

On the day itself, Jain pilgrims come to Basokund, the place most Jains honour as Mahavira's birthplace. Expect processions, prayers and a quiet, devotional crowd. In 2026 it fell on 31 March.

Buddha Purnima (April or May)

The full moon of Vaishakha marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death. Monks and lay Buddhists gather at the memorial stupa, the Relic Stupa and the peace pagoda for chanting and lamps.

Chhath Puja (October or November)

Bihar's most important festival. For four days, families fast and make offerings to the setting and rising sun from riverbanks and tanks. Around Vaishali, the big gatherings are on the Gandak and Ganga ghats at Hajipur. Visitors are welcome to watch from a respectful distance. Ask before taking photos of women making offerings. Trains into Bihar are full for weeks before.

Sonepur fair (November)

The Sonepur Mela starts on Kartik Purnima at Sonepur, across the Gandak from Hajipur. It is a huge month-long rural fair, once famous for its livestock trading, with stalls, rides and pilgrims bathing at the river confluence.

Shravan (July to August)

Devotees visit Chaumukhi Mahadev near the ruins through the monsoon month of Shravan, with Mondays the busiest.

Planning notes

Most of these dates follow the lunar calendar and move each year. Rooms in and around Vaishali are few, so on festival dates stay in Patna and come for the day. See the best time page for weather.
