Vaishali
An ancient city north of the Ganges, cradle of the world's first republic and a great Buddhist and Jain site — home to a polished Ashokan lion pillar, a gleaming World Peace Pagoda and the birthplace of Lord Mahavira.
Vaishali is ancient-republic Bihar: the Kolhua Ashokan pillar and Ananda Stupa, the Japanese-built Vishwa Shanti Stupa, the coronation tank and Bawan Pokhar temple, Buddhist-Jain heritage, and Bihari food.

Where to Eat in Vaishali
Where the republic was
Vaishali sits on the flat, green plain north of the Ganga, in the district of the same name. Two and a half thousand years ago it was the capital of the Licchavis, whose rulers were chosen by an assembly rather than born to the throne. That is why Vaishali is often called one of the world's earliest republics. Today it is a string of villages, mango groves and brick mounds, and the ruins are spread over several kilometres. You need a car or an auto-rickshaw to link them.
A Buddhist site first
The Buddha came here several times. Buddhist tradition says he gave his last sermon near Vaishali and announced that his death was near. At Kolhua, a polished sandstone pillar put up by Ashoka still stands with its lion on top, beside a brick stupa and a small tank. Nearer the village, the mud-and-brick Relic Stupa once held a share of the Buddha's ashes.
In July 2025 the state opened the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum and Memorial Stupa, a large stone stupa on a 72-acre campus near the coronation tank. The relic casket found in the Relic Stupa, kept for decades in the Patna Museum, is now enshrined on its first floor. It has quickly become the busiest stop in Vaishali.
And a Jain one
Most Jains hold that Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, was born at Kundagram, today's Basokund, a few kilometres from the ruins. A patch of land there, the Ahalya bhumi, has been left unploughed for generations out of respect. Some Digambar Jains instead honour Kundalpur near Nalanda as the birthplace.
The rest of the circuit
- The white Vishwa Shanti Stupa, a Japanese-built peace pagoda from 1996.
- The small ASI Vaishali Museum, with terracottas, seals and coins from the digs. It usually closes on Fridays.
- The Bawan Pokhar temple, with black-stone images from the Pala period.
- Raja Vishal ka Garh, a large mound said to be the old assembly hall.
Getting there
Most people come on a day trip from Patna, crossing the Ganga to Hajipur and driving north. The road trip is about 55 km and takes around two hours, depending on bridge traffic. Hajipur is the nearest large railway station, about 35 km away. There are a few simple places to stay near the sites, including the state tourism complex.
Good to know
Bihar has had full prohibition since 2016: alcohol cannot be bought, served or drunk anywhere in the state, including hotels. Food is mostly vegetarian and simple — litti chokha is the dish to try. October to March is the comfortable season; see the best time page for the rest.
Questions
Vaishali — FAQ
Can I see Vaishali in a day from Patna?
Yes. Leave Patna early, see Kolhua, the coronation tank, the new memorial stupa, the peace pagoda and the museum, and be back by evening. Add Basokund if you want the Jain sites too.
Where are the Buddha's relics from Vaishali kept now?
The relic casket found in Vaishali's Relic Stupa moved from the Patna Museum to the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum and Memorial Stupa, which opened in Vaishali in July 2025. It is on the first floor.
Why is Vaishali called the first republic?
Its Licchavi rulers governed through an assembly of clan representatives, around the 6th century BCE. Historians often cite it as one of the earliest known republics.
Is alcohol available in Vaishali?
No. Bihar has been a dry state since 2016. Sale and drinking are banned for everyone, including visitors, and the law is enforced.
Is Vaishali the same as Vaishali in Ghaziabad?
No. Vaishali in Delhi NCR is a modern suburb named after the ancient city. The historic site is in Bihar, north of Patna.
