Local tips

Leave your shoes at the foot of the steps; the terrace is barefoot.

On summer afternoons the white terrace gets very hot, so wear socks or come early.

Walk clockwise around the dome, as Buddhists do.

Keep phones on silent when monks or pilgrims are chanting.

Visit last on your day in Vaishali, when the late sun is kindest to the white dome.

Cover shoulders and knees; this is a place of worship, not only a monument.

Walk to the far side of the coronation tank for the reflection shot.

What it is

The Vishwa Shanti Stupa is a tall white dome with a gilded spire, built by the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji and opened in 1996. It is one of a chain of peace pagodas the order has built around the world, including another in Rajgir. Relics of the Buddha are said to be enshrined in its foundation and at its top.

What you see

Steps lead up to a circular terrace around the dome. On each of the four sides, a golden image of the Buddha sits in a niche, showing his birth, enlightenment, first sermon and death. The stupa sits in a garden across the water from the coronation tank, and the white dome reflected in the tank is Vaishali's most familiar view.

Visiting

Entry is free. It is usually open from morning until around sunset. Take off your shoes at the bottom of the steps. Walk around the terrace clockwise, and keep quiet if people are meditating or chanting.

The Buddha Samyak Darshan memorial stupa, the Relic Stupa and the Vaishali Museum are all within walking distance, so this is a good place to finish a half-day.

Photography

The white dome is bright, so avoid midday, when it turns into a blank shape against a pale sky. In the late afternoon the sun comes from the west and warms the whole face. For the reflection, walk to the far bank of the coronation tank and wait for the water to be still. Up close, fill the frame with one golden Buddha and a slice of white dome.
