Local tips
The museum is usually closed on Fridays, so plan your day around it.
Visit around midday, when the open sites are too hot and the galleries give some shade.
Look for the clay seals; they are small but tell the best stories about the old city.
Ask at the desk whether phone photography is allowed before you take pictures.
Leave big bags in the car; space inside is tight.
The relic casket is not here; see it at the Buddha Samyak Darshan memorial stupa nearby.
Allow 30 to 45 minutes; it is small enough to see without rushing.
What it is
The Vaishali Museum was set up by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1971 on the bank of the coronation tank. It holds finds from excavations across the ancient city, from its early settlement through the Mauryan, Kushan and Gupta periods.
What you see
The collection is small but worth half an hour. Expect terracotta figurines and toys, clay seals with inscriptions, punch-marked coins, beads, pottery and stone sculpture. The seals are the interesting part; they were used by officials and merchants and show how busy the old city was. Labels are basic, so a quick word with the staff helps.
The Relic Stupa's casket is not here. It was kept for decades at the Patna Museum and in 2025 moved to the new Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum and Memorial Stupa nearby, where it is now displayed.
Visiting
The museum is ticketed and usually open from morning to about 5 pm. It is closed on Fridays. Check timings before you go, especially around public holidays.
Indoors, it is a welcome break from the midday sun. Plan it in the middle of your visit, between Kolhua in the morning and the peace pagoda in the late afternoon.
Photography
Photography rules at ASI museums change; some allow phones without flash, others do not. Ask at the ticket desk. Outside, the museum's garden and the tank beside it make an easy frame.
Nearby
The Vishwa Shanti Stupa and the Relic Stupa are a few minutes' walk. The new memorial stupa is also close by; see it on the same visit.
