Local tips

Park near the tank and walk; the museum, peace pagoda and Relic Stupa are all a few minutes away.

Come early on a windless morning if you want a clean reflection of the peace pagoda.

Do not bathe or wash in the tank; it is a protected heritage site.

Walk the whole bank before choosing a photo spot, as the view changes with each side.

Monsoon visits show the tank full and the lawns green, but the paths can be slippery.

Keep an eye on children near the water, as the edges are not fenced everywhere.

Benches on the bank are the shadiest place to rest between the museum and the stupas.

What it is

Abhishek Pushkarni, the coronation tank, is a large rectangular pond at the centre of the Vaishali site. When the Licchavis ruled from here, their elected representatives were anointed with its water before they took office. The water was considered so sacred that, according to old accounts, ordinary people were not allowed to use it.

What it looks like now

Today it is a calm sheet of water with paved banks, trees and a path around it. The white Vishwa Shanti Stupa stands on one side, and the Vaishali Museum on another. The Relic Stupa is a short walk away, and the new Buddha Samyak Darshan memorial complex was built close by. That makes the tank the hub of any visit: most people park here and walk.

Visiting

The tank is open ground with no ticket. It is pleasant at any hour, but best early or late in the day. In the monsoon it fills to the brim and the surrounding lawns turn deep green. In the dry months the level drops and the banks show more.

Photography

The tank is a mirror. On still mornings, especially after the monsoon, the peace pagoda reflects almost perfectly. Walk the full way round before choosing a spot. For people pictures, the paved steps make a clean foreground with the water and the pagoda behind.

A note on its story

The coronation story and the rule about its water come from later Buddhist texts and local tradition. The tank's current shape and banks are largely modern restoration.
