Local tips

Go at opening time, before tour groups arrive and the open ground heats up.

Walk all four gateways, because each one faces a different direction and catches the light differently.

Look at the base of each pillar for the small carved figures most visitors miss.

Walk the rows of fallen temple stones laid out around the gateways.

Stay off the carved stones and do not climb on them, as they are protected.

Wear a hat, because there is no shade near the gateways.

Use the same fort ticket for the gateways and Khush Mahal.

Gateways without a temple

The Kala Thoranam, also called the Kakatiya thoranam, is a set of four free-standing stone gateways inside Warangal Fort. Each stands alone in the open, facing one of the four directions. They once marked the entrances to the great Swayambhu Shiva temple at the centre of the Kakatiya capital. The temple was destroyed after 1323, but the gateways survived.

The design

Each thoranam is made of two tall carved pillars joined by a heavy lintel. The lintel is topped with carved brackets and figures, including hamsa birds, lotus buds and creatures from mythology. The carving is crisp, and the proportions are very tall and elegant. Look at the base of the pillars for small figures and bands of ornament.

A state symbol

When Telangana became a state in 2014, it put the Kakatiya thoranam on its official emblem, alongside the Charminar. You will see the gateway on government buildings, signboards and souvenirs across Telangana.

The field of stones

Around the gateways, the ASI has laid out hundreds of fallen pieces from the ruined temple in rows. These include pillars, beams, sculpted panels and several Nandis. Walking among them gives a sense of how large and rich the temple was.

Visiting

The gateways are inside the ticketed fort, and the same ticket covers both. The site is open and unshaded, so early morning and late afternoon are best. Allow about 45 minutes here within a longer fort visit.
