Local tips
Arrive at opening time, before the open ground heats up.
Bring a hat and a full water bottle, as there is almost no shade inside.
Hire an official guide at the gate to understand the scattered carvings, and agree the fee first.
Walk a stretch of the stone rampart to see the moat and the angled gateways.
Step into Khush Mahal to escape the sun and see the displayed sculpture.
Ask at the counter whether an English sound-and-light show is running that evening.
Wear sturdy shoes, because the ground is uneven and full of loose stone.
The Kakatiya citadel
Warangal Fort was the heart of the Kakatiya capital. Ganapati Deva began the stone fort in the 13th century, and his daughter Rudrama Devi, one of the few women to rule a major Indian kingdom, completed it. The city was protected by rings of walls. The outer circuit was earthen, and inside it stood a stone wall with bastions and a moat. After the Delhi Sultanate took Warangal in 1323, much of the inner city was destroyed. What remains is a vast site of walls, gates and scattered carved stone.
What to see
At the centre are the four free-standing Kala Thoranam gateways. They once marked the entrances to a great Shiva temple, and fallen pillars, lintels and Nandi figures now lie in rows around them. Nearby is Khush Mahal, a plain, massive hall from after the Kakatiya period, used as a gallery. You can also walk sections of the stone walls and see how the gates were built to trap attackers.
Visiting
The site is ticketed and managed by the ASI. Most of it is open ground with very little shade. Come at opening time or in the late afternoon, and bring a hat and water. Allow at least an hour and a half. The fort is about 10 km from Hanamkonda, which makes for an easy auto ride.
Sound-and-light show
In the evening, a sound-and-light show about the Kakatiya story runs at the fort. It is usually in Telugu, with an English show when there is demand. It runs for about 50 minutes. Timings and languages change, so check at the ticket counter or with Telangana Tourism on the day.
