Local tips

Walk to the viewpoint after the caves, not before, so you can rest on the way back.

Carry water, because there is little shade on the climb.

Wear shoes with grip, as the path is loose in the dry season and slippery after rain.

Visit in the afternoon, when the sun sits behind you and lights the cave cliff.

Ask your driver about the upper viewpoint if you would rather drive than climb.

Bring a wide lens or use panorama mode to fit the whole horseshoe in.

Leave enough time to return before the caves and shuttle close.

The view that found the caves

The viewpoint sits on the far side of the Waghur gorge, opposite the caves. From here you see the whole horseshoe at once: the river bend below, the cliff above it and the dark doorways of the caves in a line along the terrace. It is often said that John Smith's hunting party first noticed the caves from this side of the gorge in 1819.

Two ways to reach it

The first is on foot from the caves. From the terrace, a path goes down to the river, crosses it on a small bridge and climbs the opposite slope. It is a proper climb, a few hundred steps, with little shade. The second is by road. A turn-off from the Aurangabad road, some way before Fardapur, leads about 8 km to the upper viewpoint on the plateau, and a stepped path from there goes down to the caves. Ask your driver which way suits your plan, and check the path is open in heavy rain.

When to go

The caves face roughly south, so the sun is behind you at the viewpoint for most of the day. Afternoon light lights the cliff evenly. The best season is just after the monsoon, when the slopes are green and the river still runs. In the dry months the gorge turns brown, and in April and May the climb is very hot.

Photos

A wide lens takes in the whole curve. A moderate zoom picks out single facades, like Cave 19 or Cave 26, against the rock. Include a little of the river bend at the bottom of the frame to show how the caves follow it.

Before you climb

Carry water, wear shoes with grip and allow at least an hour for the walk from the caves and back. The path is uneven and slippery after rain. The caves page and the Waghur gorge page cover the rest of the site.
