Good to know

Local tips

Stop at the hilltop viewpoint on the coast road first, before walking down to the sand.

Park only where the verge is wide, as the road is narrow and has blind bends.

Arrive about half an hour before sunset to get a spot at the viewpoint.

Do not swim; there are no lifeguards and the currents are strong.

Carry water and snacks, as there is little on sale beyond coconut water.

Combine it with a trip to Ratnagiri, since it lies on the way.

Take extra care on the road in the monsoon, when it gets slippery and misty.

Two beaches, one view

Aare and Ware are two small villages on the coast road between Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri. Their beaches curve side by side, split by a rocky headland, and the best way to see them is from above. The road climbs a hill between the two bays, and a viewpoint near the top looks down over both.

The coast road

The drive is part of the reason to come. The road winds over red-soil hills, through coconut groves and past small fishing settlements. In places it runs right beside the sea, with waves breaking against the rocks below the road. Aare-Ware is about 9 km south of Ganpatipule, so it fits easily into a drive to or from Ratnagiri.

Down on the sand

You can walk down to either beach. They are much quieter than Ganpatipule, often almost empty on weekdays, and the sand is clean. But the sea here is no safer. Currents are strong and the depth changes suddenly, and there are no lifeguards. Walk and paddle; do not swim.

Sunset stop

The viewpoint faces west, so it is a natural sunset stop on the way back to Ganpatipule. Arrive a little before sunset, as the parking space by the road is limited and fills on weekends. In the monsoon the headland turns bright green, but the road can be slippery and the viewpoint windy.

Practical notes

There are few facilities: expect coconut water and a snack stall at best. Bring water, and eat in Ganpatipule or Ratnagiri. Drive carefully, as the road is narrow with tight bends. See all photo spots in the area.
