Not sure what to order? The Guwahati food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.
Lunch is the main event
Assamese food is at its best at lunch, when kitchens serve the full thali with khar, dal, bhaji, fish and tenga. Dinner menus are often shorter. Aim to eat around 1 pm, and go to the thali places first; some dishes run out by mid-afternoon.
Paradise, Silpukhuri
Paradise is the name most Guwahati families give when asked where to take a visitor for Assamese food. The thali is the reason to go: several small bowls around a mound of rice, with a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian version. It is about ten minutes from the Assam State Museum, so it pairs well with a morning in the galleries. It usually closes between lunch and dinner.
Khorikaa, GS Road
Khorikaa serves Assamese and wider Northeastern dishes, including smoked pork and duck, as well as khar and aloo pitika. It is on GS Road, so it is handy if you are staying in the hotel belt. Come here for dinner if you missed a thali at lunch.
Gam's Delicacy, Zoo Road
A smaller, home-style kitchen, good for masor tenga and pitika. It is on the way back from the Navagraha Temple, which makes it an easy lunch after a morning on Chitrachal Hill.
Delicacy Restaurant, Fancy Bazaar
A long-running family restaurant in the middle of the market, with Assamese, North Indian and Chinese dishes. It is useful when you are shopping in Fancy Bazaar or heading to the ghats for a cruise, and it keeps longer hours than the thali specialists.
Before you go
Timings change, and some places close one day a week, so check on a map app before you travel across town. Weekend lunches get busy; arrive a little early or expect a short wait. Most places take UPI and cards, but carry some cash for smaller kitchens.
Questions
Guwahati — FAQ
Where should I eat in Guwahati?
4 places are listed here, across 4 areas. Each entry says what that kitchen is known for rather than reprinting its menu, so pick by the dish you want and the area you'll be in.
What should I order in Guwahati?
Start from the dishes rather than the restaurants — the Guwahati food guide covers what each dish is and when to eat it, then links to the places that do it well.
Which restaurant in Guwahati is best for a first Assamese thali?
Paradise in Silpukhuri is the usual first choice for a full thali. Khorikaa on GS Road is a good alternative if you also want smoked meats and other Northeastern dishes.
Do Guwahati restaurants serve Assamese food at dinner?
Many do, but lunch is when the full thali is at its best and every dish is available. If you only have one Assamese meal, make it lunch.
Is there good food near Kamakhya Temple?
Stalls on the approach sell tea, snacks and prasad sweets, but there are no notable sit-down Assamese restaurants on the hill. Eat after you come down, in Paltan Bazar or on the way to Silpukhuri.
