Temples in Hyderabad

Hyderabad's sacred places reflect a mixed city: Hindu temples, Old City mosques and goddess shrines that come alive at Bonalu. Here is what to expect at the ones visitors most often reach.

Chilkur Balaji

Chilkur Balaji Temple, on the western edge of the city near Osman Sagar, is dedicated to Venkateswara as Balaji. It is known as the visa temple because devotees walk eleven rounds of the shrine while making a wish, often for a visa. They come back to walk 108 rounds once it comes true. The temple is known for not running paid special darshan, so everyone queues together. Weekends and Friday mornings are the busiest. Details are on the temples page.

Birla Mandir

This white marble Venkateswara temple sits on Naubat Pahad hill above Hussain Sagar. It was built by the Birla family and opened in the 1970s. The walk up gives wide views over the lake and the Buddha statue, especially near sunset. Phones and cameras are usually not allowed inside, so use the counters at the gate or leave them in your car.

The Bonalu goddess temples

Three goddess temples lead Telangana's Bonalu festival in the month of Ashada, usually July to August. These are the Jagadamba temple inside Golconda Fort, Ujjaini Mahakali in Secunderabad and the Lal Darwaza Simhavahini Mahankali temple in the Old City. On festival Sundays, women carry decorated pots of cooked rice to the goddess, drummers lead processions and roads close around each temple.

Mecca Masjid

Mecca Masjid stands beside Charminar. It is one of the largest mosques in India, begun under the Qutb Shahis and finished under Aurangzeb. Visitors can usually enter the courtyard outside prayer times. Dress modestly, remove shoes, and women should cover their heads. Midday on Friday is the time to stay away.

Visiting respectfully

  • Shoes come off at every temple and mosque, so wear slip-ons.
  • Photography inside shrines is generally not allowed.
  • Leave leather belts and bags outside at stricter temples if staff ask.
