About the City Palace
The City Palace stands in the heart of the old city and was begun by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II when he founded Jaipur in the 1720s. It is still the home of Jaipur's former royal family, who live in the seven-storey Chandra Mahal, while the rest of the complex is a museum.
The highlight for most visitors is Pritam Niwas Chowk, a small courtyard with four painted gateways, one for each season. The Peacock Gate, covered in blue and green peacocks, is the best known. Elsewhere, the Mubarak Mahal displays royal costumes and textiles, and the Diwan-i-Khas holds two giant silver water urns made for a maharaja's journey to England.
