LMB — the old city's institution
Laxmi Misthan Bhandar has been on Johari Bazar since 1954, though the shop trades on a sweet-making lineage it traces back to 1727 — the year Jaipur itself was founded. Sources disagree on the founding date by more than two centuries, so treat the 1727 claim as the shop's own framing rather than a settled fact. What is not in dispute is that this is the old city's reference point for Rajasthani food.
What it is
A sweet shop with a restaurant attached — the two are genuinely separate operations. The counter on the street side sells ghewar, mawa kachori, kalakand, mishri mawa, sohan halwa, rasgulla and the savoury namkeen, by weight. The restaurant inside is air-conditioned, sit-down, pure vegetarian, and does the full Rajasthani thali.
What to order
- Rajasthani thali — dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri, bajra roti, sweets. The reliable way to taste the whole cuisine in one sitting.
- Pyaaaz kachori and dal kachori — good, though Rawat near Sindhi Camp is the version locals argue for.
- Paneer ghewar — the house speciality and a variation you will not find everywhere.
- Ghewar by weight — best in July and August for Teej. Also spelled ghevar.
Practical
Location — Johari Bazar Road in the old city, roughly 200 m from Hawa Mahal and 500 m from the City Palace. That is the point: it is where you end up anyway.
Hours — around 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with the sweet counter open longer than the restaurant. Confirm locally.
Prices — roughly ₹150–450 per person for mains, ₹70–90 per kachori. Mid-range for the old city and cheaper than it looks from the reputation.
Pure vegetarian — no meat and no eggs. Jaipur is overwhelmingly vegetarian, so this is typical rather than restrictive; for laal maas or junglee maas you want Handi, Niros or Spice Court instead.
There is a second outlet in Vaishali Nagar / Chitrakoot. The Johari Bazar original is the one worth visiting.
Pairing it with your day
Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Govind Dev Ji Temple are all within a short walk. The natural old-city day is Hawa Mahal early for the light, the palace and the observatory through the morning, then LMB for a late lunch — and Johari Bazar for gemstones and Tripolia Bazaar for lac bangles afterwards, since you are already there.
