Johari Bazaar
Jaipur, Rajasthan
Jaipur's jewellery market, and the reason the city has been a gem-trading centre since it was founded. 'Johari' means jeweller, and the lanes running south from Badi Chaupar towards Gopalji ka Rasta are still what they always were: Kundan and Meena enamel work, silver, coloured gemstones, bridal sets, and the cutters and polishers who make them. It runs into Bapu Bazaar at the southern end, so the two are usually walked as one continuous shopping trip.
Best time
Night, after the shop lights are on. Midday the lanes are overhead-lit and dull.
Best angle
Stand in the middle of the lane and shoot down its length at night, letting the lit shopfronts converge — a vertical frame works best. For detail, photograph the jewellers' hands at work through a shop window rather than the finished pieces, which photograph flatly behind glass.

Early morning, 8:00 – 10:00 AM
Shutters half up, delivery cycles and milk vendors, empty road. You get the architecture of the lanes without the crowd, though most shops are not open yet.

Local tips
Gemstone buying here is the single most common pressure point for visitors in Jaipur. The classic version is a friendly stranger, a tuk-tuk driver or a shop assistant who steers you to 'his' jeweller, offers a price that sounds like a bargain, and tells you the stones can be resold abroad at a profit. They cannot. Buy only from a shop you chose yourself, demand a written receipt naming the stone, its carat weight and the shop's GST number, and assume any 'certified' gem offered to you on the street is glass.
Kundan and Meena are Jaipur's signature work — Kundan is uncut polished gemstone set in gold foil, Meena is enamel painted onto the reverse. Real Meena work is slow and therefore not cheap; the very inexpensive pieces are printed or painted imitation.
Haggle, but haggle proportionately. On silver and fashion pieces 20–40% off the first quote is normal. On a serious gemstone purchase, haggling hard over a stone you cannot authenticate is the wrong place to be brave — get it independently valued instead.
Traffic is restricted or closed in parts of the old city in the evening, and the lanes are too narrow for cars. Walk in from Bapu Bazaar or get dropped at Badi Chaupar.
Pickpocketing in the crowd is the other real risk. Keep a bag in front of you and do not carry your passport shopping.
Johari Bazaar
Johari Bazaar: the market shoot in Jaipur, and the plan below is how to work it in the time the light gives you. Budget for entry (free); the posted hours are roughly 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM.
📷 The frame that works
In a market the craft is the subject - hands, flames and stacks of goods beat any wide shot of the lane.
Start from the recommended angle (stand in the middle of the lane and shoot down its length at night, letting the lit shopfronts converge — a vertical frame works best) and work outward; it is the composition the spot rewards.
🕒 When the light is right
The light window is the short version in the timing row: night, after the shop lights are on. Build the visit around it rather than around the clock.
There is a second window worth knowing: after sunset, 7:00 – 9:30 pm.
It runs busy - arrive at the opening or wait out the wave; the shot exists either way, it just takes turns.
🧵 Colour and clothing
The colours that work here do so for a reason - red reads instantly against stone, sand and sky; and gold picks up lamplight and late afternoon sun. The pose rows on this page are built for the spot - start with the one about walking the lane at night with shop lights behind you and adapt from there.
📋 The working plan
Most shops open around 10:00 AM and stay open until 21:00–23:00, later than almost anywhere else in the city. The evening is the best time to be here: the lanes are lit, the pavements fill, and the shops are all open at once. Sunday closures are inconsistent — some jewellers close, most do not. LMB, the old-city institution on Johari Bazar, sits right in the middle of it.
Traffic is restricted or closed in parts of the old city in the evening, and the lanes are too narrow for cars. Walk in from Bapu Bazaar or get dropped at Badi Chaupar.
