Kundan Meena Jewellery
Jaipur, Rajasthan
Two related Jaipur crafts sold in the same lanes. Kundan is the setting of uncut, polished gemstones into pure gold foil, pushed into place rather than clawed; Meena is enamel painted into channels on the reverse of the same piece, so a Jaipur necklace is often decorated on both sides. Johari Bazaar is the market for it, and it has been the centre of Jaipur's gem trade since the city was founded. This is also the category where a traveller is most likely to be cheated.

The story behind it
Kundan work is associated with the Mughal court and Jaipur became its main surviving centre. Meenakari is traditionally Jaipur's, and the two are frequently combined in a single piece known as kundan-meena. Bridal sets are the most elaborate form, and Jaipur's gem cutters and polishers still supply the international trade.

Albert Hall Museum
- Best time
- Best time: Dusk for the lit exterior with a reflection; early morning for clean sandstone detail.
- Best angle
- Best angle: From the far side of the garden pool, so the building reflects in the water โ that reflection shot at dusk is the one to take. For daylight, shoot the corner elevation from the garden path rather than straight-on from the gate, so the dome and the two towers are both in frame.

Amber Fort
- Best time
- Best time: Early morning, when the sun lights the fort walls and Maota Lake is calm enough for a reflection.
- Best angle
- Best angle: Stand on the far side of Maota Lake and take a wide photo of the fort with its reflection in the water.
Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing
- Best time
- Best time: Mid-morning to early afternoon, when the courtyard light is even.
- Best angle
- Best angle: The three floors of the haveli around the central courtyard; the exhibit of blocks and the printed cloth close-ups photograph better than the building exterior, which is unassuming from the lane.

Practical tips for tourists
Any offer of gemstones that can be 'resold abroad at a profit' โ this is Jaipur's most common misleading pitch and it is never true
Being steered to a jeweller by a tuk-tuk driver, a hotel employee or a friendly stranger; go only to a shop you chose yourself
Buying a significant stone without a written receipt naming the stone, its carat weight and the shop's GST number
Very cheap 'Meena' work, which is usually printed or painted imitation rather than fired enamel
Carry comfortable shoes โ the johari bazaar lanes are walked, not driven or comfortable flats โ you'll be on your feet a lot.

The two crafts
Kundan sets uncut polished gemstones into pure gold foil. The foil is pushed around the stone rather than the stone being held by claws, which is why kundan pieces look soft and slightly irregular.
Meena is enamel worked into channels, traditionally on the reverse. A fine Jaipur piece is finished on both sides and can be worn either way round.

The gemstone resale pitch is the reason to be careful. The version that catches people: a friendly stranger, a driver or a shop assistant steers you to 'his' jeweller, offers a stone at what sounds like a bargain, and explains that it can be sold abroad for several times the price. It cannot. The stone is usually glass or synthetic, and the 'foreign buyer' does not exist. Nobody walking up to you in Johari Bazaar has your financial interests in mind.
Buy from a shop you found yourself. Walk in cold. If someone brought you there, leave.
Demand paperwork. A written receipt naming the stone, its carat weight, and the shop's GST registration number. A shop selling genuine stones will provide this without hesitation; hesitation is your answer.
Get serious purchases independently valued. Haggling hard over a stone you cannot authenticate is bravery in the wrong place.
๐ฐ What things cost
- Silver and fashion kundan-style pieces: roughly โน500โ5,000
- Real meenakari enamel work: more, because it is slow and hand-fired
- Gold kundan sets: tens of thousands upwards; bridal sets much higher
- 20โ40% off the first quote is normal on silver and fashion pieces
๐ Where to buy
- Johari Bazaar โ the market, evening is best for atmosphere and everything being open
- Gopalji ka Rasta and the lanes south of Badi Chaupar โ the working jewellers
- MI Road government emporiums โ fixed prices, genuine stock, no haggling
Pickpocketing in the crowd is the other real risk here. Carry a bag in front of you and do not shop with your passport.
