Overview
Best time to visit Nahargarh Fort
Best times to shoot
Sunset, roughly 5:00 – 7:00 PM depending on season
The ticketed palace section closes at 5:30 PM, but the walls and the viewpoint stay open into the evening - that is the whole point of coming. This is the shot - the whole walled city laid out below you, going from pink to amber as the light drops, with the Aravalli ridge behind you. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset for a spot on the wall.
After dark
The city lights up and the fort itself is lit; a tripod and a longer exposure gets a completely different frame from the daytime one.

Local tips
Arrive at least an hour before sunset to explore the Madhavendra Bhawan before the light fades.
Arrange your ride back before dark, as the hill road is narrow and winding.
Walk up the steep path from the old city only in daylight and with water.
Wear shoes with good grip for the uneven stone paths and walls.
Keep back from unfenced edges on the walls, especially when taking photos.
Combine your visit with Jaigarh Fort, which is on the same ridge.
Carry snacks and water, as there is little food on the hill.
About Nahargarh Fort
Nahargarh Fort sits on the edge of the Aravalli ridge directly above Jaipur's old city. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built it in 1734 as part of the city's defences, together with Amber and Jaigarh forts. In the 19th century, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II added the Madhavendra Bhawan, a set of matching suites for his queens joined by long corridors.
Most people come for the view. From the walls you can see the whole city spread out below, from the old walled city to the newer suburbs, and at sunset the lights come on across the plain. You can drive up by road via the Amer side, or walk up the steep path from the old city.
