A forest waterfall on the Kaladhungi road

Corbett Falls is a waterfall of about 20 metres near Kaladhungi, roughly 25 km west of Ramnagar. It lies a short way off the main road, in teak and mixed forest looked after by the forest department. A car park, a ticket window and a walking path lead to a pool at the foot of the fall. It is a quiet stop on the way to the Corbett Museum, or a break on the road to Nainital.

The walk

The path in takes a few minutes and is mostly flat, with a few uneven sections near the water. Rocks around the pool are wet and slippery all year, and more so after rain. Children and older visitors should stay on the dry path.

When it looks best

The fall is fullest just after the monsoon, in September and October, when the forest is green. By May and June the flow thins to a trickle, though the shade is welcome in the heat. In the monsoon itself the path and the approach can be muddy and sometimes closed after storms, and in past years fallen trees have shut the site for cleanup. Check locally if you plan to go between July and September.

Bathing and safety

Do not bathe or swim in the pool. The water is deeper and colder than it looks, the rocks are slick, and the forest department discourages it. After heavy rain upstream, the water can rise quickly.

Wildlife

The falls sit in forest where elephants and leopards live. Stay on the path, leave before dusk, and do not wander into the forest behind the fall. Carry your rubbish out; there are few bins.

Pairing it

Combine the falls with the Corbett Museum at Kaladhungi, a short drive on. Together they make a half day away from the safari zones.
