Local tips
Book permits only on the Corbett Tiger Reserve's official portal and check the web address carefully before paying.
Carry the original ID you used to book, as the gate checks every member of the group.
Book a mix of zones rather than the same one twice, as each looks and feels different.
Take the morning safari if you can only do one, for cooler air and more animal movement.
Wrap your camera in a scarf or bag against the dust thrown up by the jeep ahead.
Keep snacks sealed and never throw anything out of the vehicle.
Tip the driver and guide separately if you are happy with them.
India's first national park
Corbett was set up in 1936 as Hailey National Park and renamed in the 1950s after Jim Corbett. With the forests around it, it forms the Corbett Tiger Reserve. The land runs from sal forest and bamboo in the south to river valleys and grassland along the Ramganga further in. Beyond tigers, you may see elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, jackals, crocodiles in the river and hundreds of kinds of birds.
Choosing a zone
You never book "Corbett". You book a zone, and each has its own gate. Bijrani, entered close to Ramnagar, has mixed forest and open patches and is the classic day safari. Jhirna and Dhela share a gate south of town, with drier forest and a longer season. Garjia is a newer day zone. Durga Devi, in the north-east, is hilly and good for birds. Dhikala is the grassland heart of the park and works differently, with overnight stays and a shared canter bus for day visitors.
Booking
Permits are sold on the reserve's official online portal, zone by zone, and popular dates sell out soon after booking opens. The group leader needs to upload ID, and every member's ID is checked at the gate. Many websites look official and are not. If you book through an agent, ask for the permit itself, not a receipt.
On the day
Morning and afternoon safaris each last a few hours. A registered jeep, a driver and a forest guide are assigned to you. Stay seated, do not get out, and keep your voice down. Do not feed or call animals.
What to expect
Tigers are seen on some safaris and missed on many. Go for the forest itself, the elephant herds and the birds, and treat a tiger as a bonus.
