Good to know

Local tips

Book the Dhikala forest lodge as soon as your dates open on the official portal, as rooms sell out in minutes.

If you cannot get a room, book the canter from Ramnagar instead of a jeep safari.

Carry cash, a torch and power banks, as shops and charging points inside are limited.

Bring a warm layer for the evenings and the early drive out, even in March.

Keep food and rubbish sealed at the lodge, as monkeys and other animals come close.

Sit on the river side of the canter on the way in for views of the Ramganga.

Do not plan to be reachable by phone while you are inside.

The grassland at the centre

Dhikala is the largest and best-known zone of Corbett. It sits on the edge of the Patli Dun valley, above the Ramganga reservoir, with a wide grassland called the Dhikala chaur in front of it and the Kanda ridge behind. Elephant herds graze in the open, deer gather at the edges, and on a good day a tiger crosses the grass in full view. The river and reservoir bring crocodiles, otters and water birds.

Getting in

Private jeep safaris into Dhikala are only for people staying at the forest rest houses inside the zone. Everyone else comes on the canter, a shared open bus that runs from Ramnagar in the morning and afternoon. Canter seats and forest-lodge rooms are booked on the reserve's official portal and go fast. The drive in from the Dhangarhi gate is long, through forest and along the river, and is part of the safari.

Staying overnight

The Dhikala forest rest house complex is old and simple, with rooms that range from the original bungalow to newer blocks, cabins and dormitories. It is fenced and quiet after dark. Stays are limited to a few nights at a time, and you cannot leave the fenced area at night. The canteens serve vegetarian food, and alcohol and meat are not allowed. Mobile signal is patchy at best.

Season

The official site lists Dhikala as open from about 15 November to 15 June. It closes for the monsoon, and no one stays overnight in the reserve from mid-June to mid-November.

Why it is worth the effort

Dhikala shows the park at its most open. Watching the grassland at dawn from a watchtower, with elephants moving through the mist, is the Corbett most people come for, whether or not a tiger appears.
