What's on in Kolhapur
Kolhapur's calendar follows its goddess and its old royal family. The big dates are Navratri and Dussehra in autumn, the Jyotiba fair in spring, and the Kirnotsav sunsets twice a year.
Nothing dated is confirmed for Kolhapur right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.
The year in Kolhapur
Kolhapur packs most of its outdoor calendar into the cooler months; the pre-monsoon peak is hot enough that daytime processions are genuinely hard going. Broadly, Oct – Feb is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.
Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.
Across Maharashtra
Ganesh Chaturthi
🗓️ August–SeptemberMaharashtra's biggest festival: clay Ganesh idols in homes and neighbourhood pandals for up to ten days, then carried in processions to the nearest river, lake or sea.
Planning: Immersion days close roads and fill the ghats and beaches; the largest crowds by far are in Mumbai and Pune.
Nationwide
Diwali
🗓️ October–NovemberThe biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.
Holi
🗓️ MarchColoured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.
Navratri and Dussehra
🗓️ September–OctoberNine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.
Eid al-Fitr
🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each yearThe end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.
Makar Sankranti and Pongal
🗓️ mid-JanuaryThe harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.
Navratri at Ambabai
Navratri, usually in late September or October, is the biggest time of year at the Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) temple. The goddess is dressed in a different form each day, and the temple stays busy late into the night. Queues can take hours, especially at weekends. If you want to see it, go early in the morning and allow extra time for everything.
Shahi Dasara
Navratri ends with Dussehra, and Kolhapur marks it with its royal Dussehra, the Shahi Dasara. The Chhatrapati family takes part in the ceremony at Dasara Chowk, and the district runs cultural programmes in the days around it. Streets near Dasara Chowk close to traffic in the evening, so walk in.
Kirnotsav
Twice a year, around 31 January to 2 February and around 9 to 11 November, the setting sun shines through the main entrance of the Ambabai temple and reaches the goddess. The rays touch her feet on the first evening and climb higher over the next two. It depends on clear skies, so the event can move by a day or fail in cloud.
The Jyotiba fair
At the Chaitra full moon, usually in late March or April, lakhs of pilgrims climb to Jyotiba carrying tall decorated poles called sasan kathi. Pink gulal fills the air and turns the hill pink. Roads jam for hours, so go the evening before or very early, and expect crowds all day. Sundays through the year are a smaller version.
Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali
Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, brings neighbourhood pandals and immersion processions to the city streets. Diwali, in October or November, lights up Mahadwar Road and the markets, which stay open late.
Pavankhind in July
In July, groups of trekkers walk from Panhala Fort towards Pavankhind in the rain, following the route of Shivaji's escape from the siege of Panhala in July 1660. It is a long, wet walk through the hills and is best done with an organised group.
