Local tips
Take a taxi up and walk down the steps if you are still in your first two days at altitude.
Arrive 30 to 40 minutes before sunset to get a spot at the wall.
Bring a warm layer, as the wind on the terrace turns cold as soon as the sun drops.
Walk clockwise around the stupa, as you would at any Buddhist shrine.
Keep your voice low, because people come here to sit quietly.
Carry a torch for the steps if you plan to walk down after dark.
Walk down into Changspa afterwards, where Alchi Kitchen and Bon Appetit are close by.
A modern peace stupa
Shanti Stupa is a large white stupa on a hilltop in Changspa, on the western side of Leh, at about 3,600 m. It was built between 1983 and 1991 by the Japanese Buddhist monk Gyomyo Nakamura with help from Ladakhi Buddhists, to mark 2,500 years of Buddhism and to promote world peace. The 14th Dalai Lama laid its foundation in 1985 and enshrined relics of the Buddha at its base.
What you see
The stupa has two levels. On the first, a golden Buddha sits at the centre of a Dharma wheel. On the second, carved panels show scenes from the Buddha's life, including his birth, his meditation and his death. It is a place for quiet, not a working monastery, and the terrace is a small, open space.
The view
The terrace looks across to Leh Palace and the old town on the opposite ridge, with the Stok range to the south and the Indus valley beyond. At sunset the palace and town catch the last light, which is why most visitors come in the evening. The stupa is lit up after dark.
Getting up
There are two ways to the top: 555 steep steps from the Changspa end, or a road that taxis and cars use. The steps are a hard climb on your first day at altitude. If you are still acclimatising, go up by car and walk down the steps instead.
Timing your visit
Sunrise is quiet and cold, with pink light on the peaks. Sunset draws the crowd, so arrive 30 to 40 minutes early to find space at the wall. Evenings turn cold quickly here; bring a layer. After sunset, walk back down to Changspa for dinner at one of the garden restaurants nearby.
