How eating works on the island
Most food on Majuli is cooked in homes and guesthouses, with a few simple kitchens near the main villages. Menus are short and change with the season and the day's catch. Kitchens open early for breakfast and close early at night. Order dinner in advance, especially in a homestay.
La Maison de Ananda, Garamur
A well-known bamboo-cottage guesthouse whose kitchen serves Assamese thalis, masor tenga and simple traveller food. It is close to the satras around Garamur and Kamalabari, which makes it a convenient lunch stop even if you are not staying there. Call ahead for meals if you are not a guest.
Majuli Kitchen, Kamalabari
A simple local kitchen for Assamese thalis, khar and pitha, handy for a meal after visiting Auniati Satra. Expect plain surroundings and home-style cooking.
Risong Mishing Kitchen
A Mishing homestay kitchen serving village food: smoked meat, fish, greens, rice steamed in leaves and apong, the local rice beer. It is the best way to taste the island's tribal cooking. Book ahead so the family can prepare, and eat what is served.
Garamur Dhaba
A roadside dhaba for rice meals, fish curry and pitha, useful between satras and near Samaguri. Quick, simple and filling.
Tips
Carry cash; card machines are not common and ATMs can run dry. Kitchens may close early or on festival days. During the Raas Mahotsav in November, guesthouses fill and meals get busy, so book food with your room. Do not take meat, fish or alcohol onto satra grounds, even as leftovers.
