Best time to visit Mussoorie
Mussoorie can be visited all year, but each season is very different. The real choice is between clear views, mild weather and fewer crowds.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
October and November are clear, crisp and dry — the best mountain views of the year; December to February turns cold, with snow on the higher ground, enough in places to close roads.
Pack: warm layers and a jacket for October–November; thermals, gloves and a woollen cap from December.
Shines now: Gun Hill, Lal Tibba
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
RecommendedApr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.
Shines now: Gun Hill, Lal Tibba
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
Jul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Shines now: Company Garden
Plan a monsoon day →October and November: the clearest months
After the monsoon, the air is clean and the snow peaks are sharp in the mornings. Days are mild, nights are cold, and the crowds are thinner except around Diwali. From October, the winter line can appear along the horizon at sunset on some evenings. For views from Lal Tibba, this is the best time.
December to February: cold, sometimes snowy
Winter days can be bright and pleasant, but nights fall close to freezing. Snow comes a few times in most winters, often in January, and it usually melts within a day or two, so do not plan a trip around it. The week between Christmas and New Year is very busy, with the Winterline Carnival bringing music and food to the Mall. Hotels fill up and the Dehradun road jams.
March and April: spring
The weather warms up, and Company Garden and the Landour lanes fill with flowers. Views are often good in March, getting hazier into April. This is a quiet, easy time for walking.
May and June: peak summer
This is when the plains are hottest and Mussoorie is busiest. Days are warm and pleasant, but the Mall, Gun Hill and Kempty Falls are packed, especially at weekends. The road from Dehradun can take hours, and police often divert traffic and hold back vehicles at the entry points. Haze often hides the snow peaks. Book early and come on weekdays.
July to September: monsoon
Mussoorie gets very heavy rain in July and August. The town is green and misty, and hotels are cheaper, but views are rare and landslides can close the hill roads. At Kempty Falls, heavy rain upstream can swell the water within minutes, so keep out of the pool in this season. Travel with spare days.
Our pick
Mid-October to November for views and calm; March for spring flowers; weekdays in any season.
