Best time to visit Nagarjuna Sagar

Nagarjuna Sagar has two good seasons for different reasons. Late monsoon brings the water spectacle, and winter brings the weather for walking the island.

August to October: water season

If the monsoon is strong upstream, the reservoir fills and the dam's crest gates are raised, usually some time between August and October. Water thunders down the spillway, and Ethipothala Falls runs at full strength. This is the most dramatic time to come. Weekend crowds and traffic at the dam can be very heavy, and the gates do not open every year. Follow local news for release announcements before you travel.

November to February: the comfortable months

Once the rains end, the air is clearer and days are warm but not punishing. Mornings on the launch to Nagarjunakonda Island are pleasant, and walking the island and Anupu is easy. The falls are still running in November. December and January are the best months for a relaxed, full day.

March to June: hot

The plateau heats up fast from March. April and May afternoons often pass 40 °C, with little shade on the island or at the viewpoints. The reservoir drops, the falls thin and the launch schedule can be cut when water levels are low. If you must come now, take the first launch and be indoors by midday.

June to July: early monsoon

The first rains cool the air and green the hills, but the reservoir is often still low. Launches can be suspended in rough weather, so confirm on the morning you plan to cross.

Festival timing

  • Buddha Purnima (April–May) brings special gatherings at Buddhavanam.
  • Krishna Pushkaralu, a river festival held every 12 years, last took place in 2016. Ghats along the Krishna fill with pilgrims.
