Local tips
Take the first launch of the day for cooler walking and softer light.
Confirm launch times at the jetty that morning, as schedules change with water levels and weather.
Avoid Fridays, when the island museum is closed.
Carry water, a hat and a snack, because there is little shade or food on the island.
Note the return time when you land, as the launch will not wait.
See the museum first, then walk out to the rebuilt stupas with your remaining time.
Wear grippy shoes for the wet jetty steps and uneven island paths.
A city saved from the water
In the 3rd and 4th centuries CE, the valley below was Vijayapuri, capital of the Ikshvaku kings. It had palaces, an amphitheatre, Hindu temples and dozens of Buddhist monasteries and stupas. When the dam was planned, archaeologists excavated the valley and moved its key monuments to the top of Nagarjunakonda hill. The reservoir then filled around it. The hill is now an island in Andhra Pradesh's Palnadu district.
Getting there
The island can only be reached by launch. Tourism launches usually leave at set times, around 9:30 am, 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, from the jetty at Vijayapuri South on the Andhra Pradesh shore. Telangana Tourism also runs boats on the reservoir. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, and the ticket includes a fixed time ashore before the return. Schedules change with water levels and weather, and launches may be cancelled in rough conditions or when the reservoir is very low. Confirm the times on the morning you go.
On the island
From the jetty, paths lead up to the rebuilt monuments. You will see stupa bases, monastery cells, a bathing tank and the foundations of temples, all laid out on open grass. The Nagarjunakonda Museum holds the finest sculptures and relics. Photography is not allowed inside it.
Fridays
The ASI museum is closed on Fridays. Launches may still run for visitors to the island, but the museum is the heart of the visit. Choose another day if you can.
What to carry
There is almost no shade and little food on the island. Take water, a hat and a snack. Catch the first launch for cooler walking and the most time before the heat builds.
