The dam
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is best from the viewpoints below it and on the approach roads, where the full length of the masonry wall is visible. The great frame comes when the crest gates are open, usually between August and October in a good monsoon year. Spray hangs over the spillway, and the afternoon sun can throw a rainbow into it. The dam is a guarded installation, so photograph only where signs and staff allow. Do not fly a drone.
From the launch
The 45-minute crossing to Nagarjunakonda Island is a photo trip in itself. The reservoir opens out on all sides, low hills line the shore and the island rises ahead. Morning launches give softer light and calmer water.
On the island
The reassembled stupas and monastery foundations sit on open grass under a big sky. Frame them with the reservoir behind to show how the island was saved from the water. Photography is not allowed inside the museum, so shoot the vihara-shaped building from outside.
Ethipothala Falls
Ethipothala Falls drops about 21 m into a green pool. You see it from a viewing terrace above the gorge. It is fullest from August to October, and it can thin to a trickle by summer. Late afternoon puts light on the water.
Anupu
At Anupu, the rebuilt amphitheatre's stepped stone tiers make a strong pattern from the top row. The site is usually quiet, so you can take your time.
Tips
- Use a polarising filter for glare on the reservoir if you have one.
- Keep a dry bag for the launch, since spray is common.
- Do not photograph security posts at the dam.
Questions
Nagarjuna Sagar — FAQ
When can I photograph the dam with its gates open?
Only when the reservoir is full after a strong monsoon, usually between August and October. The gates are not opened every year, so watch local news before you travel.
Can I take photos inside the Nagarjunakonda museum?
No. Photography is not allowed inside the museum galleries. You can photograph the building and the island ruins outside.
Is Ethipothala worth photographing in summer?
Less so. By April and May the flow can drop to a thin stream. It is at its best from August to October.
Can I fly a drone at Nagarjuna Sagar?
No, not without official permission. The dam is a guarded installation, and the island and Anupu are protected monuments.
