An island museum
The Nagarjunakonda Museum stands on Nagarjunakonda Island. It is run by the Archaeological Survey of India, and its building is laid out like a Buddhist vihara, a monastery built around a courtyard. It is one of the very few museums in the world you can reach only by boat. It holds the best finds from the excavation of the valley before the reservoir flooded it.
What is inside
The galleries are arranged by period, from prehistoric tools found in the valley to the Ikshvaku city of the 3rd and 4th centuries CE. The highlights are Buddhist. You will see relic caskets from the stupas, a tall standing Buddha, and carved limestone panels in the Amaravati style that tell scenes from the Buddha's life and the Jataka stories. There are also coins, inscriptions and pieces from the Hindu temples, showing how mixed the old city was.
Rules and timings
The museum is usually open from morning until mid-afternoon and is closed on Fridays. Photography is not allowed inside the galleries, and staff enforce it. Bags may need to be left at the counter.
Fitting it into the launch
The launch gives you a fixed time on the island, often little more than an hour. Go to the museum first while it is cool and uncrowded, then walk out to the ruins. Keep an eye on the clock, because the return launch will not wait.
