Best Photo Spots in Nagpur

Nagpur is flat and bright, so the good pictures come early and late in the day. The stupa at Deekshabhoomi is the one frame everyone wants; the lakes give you the sunsets.

Work around the sun

Nagpur's light is hard for much of the year. From March to June the sky turns white by mid-morning, and pale stone loses all its detail. Shoot in the first two hours after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. In winter the air is clearer, and the low sun gives the stupa and the fort walls some shape.

Deekshabhoomi

The white dome is the city's defining picture. Stand back on the open ground in front of it and use a wide lens, because the stupa is broad rather than tall. Photography is usually not allowed inside the main hall, so take your pictures outside. See the Deekshabhoomi page.

The lakes

Futala Lake has open water with wooded hills on three sides, and it is at its best around sunset. The big musical fountain there has not been running regular public shows; check local news before you plan an evening around it. Ambazari Lake is the city's largest. Its garden has been closed for redevelopment for several years, so you will be shooting the water from the roadside and the embankment.

Zero Mile and Sitabuldi

The Zero Mile Stone is small: a sandstone pillar, a survey marker and four painted horses. Get low and close so the horses fill the frame. Sitabuldi Fort opens to the public on 26 January, 1 May and 15 August only. On those days you can photograph the ramparts, the 1817 graves and the view over the city centre. On other days you can only see its walls from the streets below.

Courtesy

Ask before you photograph people, especially at Deekshabhoomi, where many visitors are pilgrims. Keep your camera down during ceremonies and in October, when the stupa is at its busiest. The fort is an Army site, so follow the soldiers' instructions about what you may photograph.
