Local tips

Check local news before you go if you want the fountain, as shows had not resumed in August 2026.

Arrive half an hour before sunset to walk the promenade in good light.

Come on a weekday evening if you want a calmer walk.

Take a tanga ride along the front, and agree the fare before you get in.

Eat at the lakeside kiosks after dark, when the stalls are busiest and freshest.

Carry mosquito repellent for the evening by the water.

Book an app cab for the ride back, because parking and autos get scarce on weekend nights.

Nagpur's evening lakefront

Futala Lake was built by the Bhonsle rulers of Nagpur about 200 years ago, in the west of the city near Telangkhedi. It covers about 60 acres, with wooded hills on three sides and a promenade on the fourth. This is where Nagpur comes after work and on weekends: families, students and couples walking the front, eating from the food kiosks and taking tanga (horse-carriage) rides.

The fountain

A large multimedia musical fountain was built on floating barges in the lake, with seating for thousands along the shore. Court cases over environmental rules stopped it. In October 2025, the Supreme Court held that Futala is a man-made lake, not a notified wetland, and allowed the temporary structures to continue under conditions. As of August 2026, repairs were still going on and regular public shows had not resumed. In mid-August 2026, a false rumour that the show had restarted drew big crowds to the lake for nothing. Check local news before you go for the fountain.

Without the fountain

The lake is still worth an evening. Come about half an hour before sunset, walk the promenade as the sky changes, then eat at the kiosks as the lights come on. Weekends are much busier than weekdays.

Getting there

Futala is about 6 km west of Sitabuldi. App cabs are easiest. Parking fills on weekend evenings, so a cab saves time.
