For sunrises and sunsets, go in winter. For relief from the heat, go in summer. For waterfalls, go just after the monsoon.

Heavy rain, mist and full waterfalls, with a real risk of landslides, road closures and slippery trails.
Pack: a good rain shell, quick-dry layers and grippy shoes — and leech socks if you plan forest walks.
Shines now: Netarhat Dam
Plan a monsoon day →October to February: clear skies
This is peak season. Skies are clearest, which is what you want for Magnolia Sunset Point and the dawn views. Days are pleasant and sunny. Nights are cold, especially in December and January, when temperatures on the plateau can approach freezing. Lodges fill on weekends and around Christmas and New Year, so book ahead.
March: the quiet sweet spot
Crowds thin, days are warm, and nights are cool rather than cold. Skies are still mostly clear, and the forest begins to flush with new leaves. Sarhul, the spring festival, often falls in late March or April.
April to June: escape the heat
When Ranchi and the plains are hot, Netarhat stays milder, which draws families in the summer holidays. Days are warm and evenings pleasant. Haze and dust can soften the sunsets, and pre-monsoon storms can arrive from late May.
July to September: rain and mist
The monsoon brings heavy rain, thick mist and a deep green forest. Lower Ghaghri and Upper Ghaghri Falls are at their fullest. Sunrises and sunsets are often hidden by cloud. Trails are slippery and leeches appear on forest paths. Roads can be slow after heavy rain. It is lovely for a quiet stay, but not for guaranteed views.
Late September to November: after the rains
The falls still run well, the air clears, and the forest stays green. It is arguably the best balance of waterfalls and views.
Festivals
Sarhul (March–April) and Karma (August–September) are celebrated in the villages of the plateau. See events and festivals.
Our pick
Late October to early December: clear sunsets, waterfalls still running, cold but not bitter nights, and fewer crowds than at New Year.
Questions
Netarhat — FAQ
Which month is best for Netarhat?
November is a strong choice — clear skies, waterfalls still running after the rains, and nights cold but manageable. December to February is also good if you pack warmly.
Is Netarhat good in the monsoon?
It is green and misty, and the waterfalls are full, but sunrise and sunset views are often lost to cloud and trails are slippery.
Is Netarhat crowded at New Year?
Yes. Late December and early January are the busiest weeks, and rooms sell out. Book well ahead or avoid those dates.
