Local tips
Stay well back from the edge, as there are no railings and the grass is slippery after rain.
Pick a clear day between October and April, as monsoon cloud can hide the gorge for hours.
Start the Rasong stairway early in the day and only if you are fit, as the climb back is long and steep.
Carry water and snacks, since there are only a couple of small stalls near the ridge.
Hire a taxi for the round trip, as the last stretch of road is narrow and there is little transport back.
Leave before dark, because the village roads back to Shillong are unlit.
Take your rubbish with you, as the ridge has no bins.
The end of the hills
Laitlum means roughly "the end of the hills". It is a grassy ridge about 25 km south-east of Shillong, where the plateau stops suddenly and falls into deep, forested gorges. Clouds often drift through the valleys below you. The drive takes about an hour through small villages, and the last stretch is narrow.
On the ridge
From the parking area, a short walk brings you out onto open grass with views on three sides. There are no railings. The ground near the edge is steep and can be slippery after rain, so stay well back, especially with children.
The stairway to Rasong
A stone stairway of about 3,000 steps runs down from the ridge to Rasong, a small village in the valley. The village has long relied on a simple ropeway to carry supplies up and down. Going down is hard on the knees, and coming back up is a serious climb. Only attempt it if you are fit, start early, and carry water.
Weather and light
Fog can sit in the valleys in the early morning and roll back later. In the monsoon, cloud can hide everything for hours, and the steps and grass are slippery. From October to April you have the best chance of a clear view. Leave before dark, as the roads back are unlit.
What to bring
Facilities are few. A couple of local stalls sell tea and snacks. Bring water, a warm layer and good shoes, and take all your rubbish home with you.
