Temples first

The Thousand Pillar, Bhadrakali and Ramappa temples are all in daily worship. Covered shoulders and knees are expected. Kurtas, long skirts, salwar sets, full trousers and shirts all work. Shoes come off before the inner areas, so wear sandals or slip-ons you can leave at the stand. Stone floors heat up badly by midday, so carry a pair of cotton socks for hot days if the temple allows them.

Out on the fort

Warangal Fort is a wide, open field of ruins with almost no shade. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a water bottle matter more than anything else you wear. Choose light, pale fabric. Walking shoes or sturdy sandals are better than flat soles on the uneven stone.

The Ramappa day

The drive to Ramappa Temple makes for a long day in the sun. Wear something modest enough for the temple and cool enough for the lake walk. A scarf or stole doubles as sun cover and a head covering if you want one.

Seasons

  • October to February: warm days and mild nights. A light layer covers early starts.
  • March to June: hot and dry, often well above 40 °C in May. Wear the loosest cotton you own and keep your head covered.
  • June to September: humid with heavy showers. Choose quick-dry fabric and sandals that can get wet.

Local textiles

Warangal durries are flat-woven cotton rugs made in the Kothawada area of the city, and they carry a GI tag. For clothing, Telangana's ikat sarees and fabrics from Pochampally, about 110 km away, are sold in Warangal's handloom shops. Buy from co-operatives or government emporiums if you want genuine handloom rather than a printed copy.

Questions

Is there a dress code at the Thousand Pillar Temple?

There is no formal code posted for visitors, but modest dress with covered shoulders and knees is expected, and shoes come off before the inner areas.

What shoes should I wear in Warangal?

Slip-on sandals with a good grip. You will remove them at every temple, and the fort's uneven stone needs more grip than flat soles offer.

Where can I buy Warangal durries?

Warangal durries are woven in the Kothawada area of the city. Buy from weaver co-operatives or government handloom shops there to be sure of genuine GI-tagged work.

How hot does Warangal get in summer?

Very hot. May afternoons often pass 40 °C. Wear loose cotton, cover your head, and do the fort and Ramappa at dawn.
