The story behind it
The jutti or mojari is a closed-toe slip-on leather shoe, often embroidered, worn across north India. Agra's leather industry makes it a manufacturing centre rather than just a retail one.

Agra Fort
- Best time
- Best time: Late afternoon, when the red sandstone warms to orange and the Taj glows down the river; early morning for soft light and empty courtyards.
- Best angle
- Best angle: Stand in the Diwan-i-Am and take a photo through a row of scalloped arches towards the throne alcove, then walk to the Musamman Burj terrace to zoom in on the Taj.
Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra
- Best time
- Best time: 6:00โ7:30 AM for empty courtyards, low raking light on the red sandstone, and deer on the lawns. Late afternoon gives warm stone but more visitors. Avoid 10:00 AM โ 3:00 PM: harsh overhead light, heat haze, and the sandstone goes flat.
- Best angle
- Best angle: Shoot the Jami Darwaza south gate straight-on from the centre of the approach for the four white minarets in symmetry, then move to a corner for a three-quarter view that shows the gate's depth. For the tomb itself, get distance โ from the far end of the garden the five receding terraces read as a pyramid, which is the point of the building. Inside the courtyard, shoot up at the marble chhatris against sky. Deer on the lawn at dawn need a long lens or a phone zoom from a low crouch.
Chini Ka Rauza
- Best time
- Best time: Late afternoon, roughly 4:00 โ 5:45 PM, when low raking sun brings out the surviving glazed-tile colour on the upper walls and dome. Midday light flattens the building completely because the surface has no deep relief to cast shadows.
- Best angle
- Best angle: Tight shots of the surviving tile fragments on the upper walls and around the arches beat any attempt at a full facade, because most of the cladding is gone. From the north-east corner you get the dome and two walls in one frame. Inside, the painted plaster in the chambers is best shot straight-on with a wide lens in available light โ flash is usually prohibited and the interiors are dim.

Styling Agra Leather Jutti & Footwear in Agra
Agra Leather Jutti & Footwear is a traditional wear favourite in Agra, and looks its best in tan, deep brown, gold-embroidered, black and oxblood., worn with jutti or mojari โ slip-on, no fastenings.
Comfort is high, so plan your route accordingly. You can buy or rent it around sadar bazaar (the main leather market) and kinari bazaar for embroidered pairs from about โน400โ3,000 for jutti; โน800โ5,000 for bags. Check the photo spots above for the best time and angle to capture the look.
Agra Leather Jutti & Footwear
Two separate reasons to buy leather in Agra, and they happen to point at the same shoe.
First: Agra is one of India's major leather and footwear manufacturing centres. Not a retail city that imports shoes โ a city that makes them. Tanneries and workshops have operated here for generations, which means prices are lower than in Delhi, Jaipur or Mumbai for the same quality, and the range is wider.
Second: a slip-on shoe is not a style preference in Agra, it is a requirement. You will remove your footwear at the Taj Mahal's marble plinth and mausoleum chamber, at Agra Fort's marble pavilions, at every temple, at Jama Masjid, and at Guru ka Taal. On a full sightseeing day that is fifteen to twenty times. Anything with laces, buckles or straps will make you miserable by lunchtime.
What a jutti is
A jutti (also called mojari, and in Rajasthan mojari specifically) is a closed-toe slip-on leather shoe, traditionally hand-made on a wooden last, with no fastening of any kind. The classic forms:
- Plain tan or brown leather jutti โ the everyday version, โน400โ1,200.
- Embroidered jutti with zari, mirror work or thread โ โน800โ3,000, and the speciality you can buy with genuine Agra zardozi on it.
- Curled-toe mojari โ the formal Rajput and Mughal court shape, worn with a sherwani.
- Khussa โ a pointed, upturned variant.
Buying them well
- Buy them half a size larger than you think. Jutti are made on rigid lasts and stretch lengthways only slightly; the fit that matters is across the foot. A pair that is snug at the instep will be right in a week; a pair that pinches will never be.
- Check the sole. Traditional jutti have a leather sole, which is beautiful and slippery on polished marble โ and Agra is polished marble. A rubber or crepe sole is the practical choice for a sightseeing trip, and most shops now stock both.
- Check the stitching at the toe. The join between upper and sole is where cheap jutti fail. Look for tight, even, doubled stitching rather than glue.
- Smell and feel the leather. Full-grain leather smells like leather and creases finely. Corrected or bonded leather smells chemical and creases in large folds.
- Break them in before the Taj. Wear new jutti for an hour at the hotel first. A sunrise visit is not the moment to discover they bite.
Other leather worth buying
Bags โน800โ5,000 โ a soft leather shoulder bag is a better Agra buy than a backpack, since bags are searched at the Taj and a small one moves faster. Belts โน300โ1,200. Wallets, journals and desk pieces. Quality is high and the prices are the best in north India.
Where to buy
Sadar Bazaar is the main leather market and has the widest selection and the most competition, which keeps prices honest. Kinari Bazaar in the old city is better for embroidered pairs, since that is where the zari work is. Shilpgram near the East Gate is curated and pricier.
Haggle 20โ40% off the first quote in Sadar Bazaar. Buy two pairs and the second becomes cheap. Pay cash and it becomes cheaper still.
The one restriction that matters
Jain temples prohibit leather entirely โ not just shoes, but belts, bags, wallets and straps. At Chintamani Parshwanath Jain Temple you will be asked to leave all of it at the deposit or in your vehicle. If you are buying a leather bag in Agra and also plan to visit a Jain temple, plan to store it. At Hindu temples and mosques only footwear comes off; the full leather prohibition is specific to Jain practice.
Do not wear new leather into a temple on the same day you bought it if you can avoid it โ some temples object to untreated new leather, and it is an avoidable friction.
