Agra Fort
- Best time
- Best time: Late afternoon, when the red sandstone warms to orange and the Taj glows down the river; early morning for soft light and empty courtyards.
- Best angle
- Best angle: Stand in the Diwan-i-Am and take a photo through a row of scalloped arches towards the throne alcove, then walk to the Musamman Burj terrace to zoom in on the Taj.
Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra
- Best time
- Best time: 6:00โ7:30 AM for empty courtyards, low raking light on the red sandstone, and deer on the lawns. Late afternoon gives warm stone but more visitors. Avoid 10:00 AM โ 3:00 PM: harsh overhead light, heat haze, and the sandstone goes flat.
- Best angle
- Best angle: Shoot the Jami Darwaza south gate straight-on from the centre of the approach for the four white minarets in symmetry, then move to a corner for a three-quarter view that shows the gate's depth. For the tomb itself, get distance โ from the far end of the garden the five receding terraces read as a pyramid, which is the point of the building. Inside the courtyard, shoot up at the marble chhatris against sky. Deer on the lawn at dawn need a long lens or a phone zoom from a low crouch.
Chini Ka Rauza
- Best time
- Best time: Late afternoon, roughly 4:00 โ 5:45 PM, when low raking sun brings out the surviving glazed-tile colour on the upper walls and dome. Midday light flattens the building completely because the surface has no deep relief to cast shadows.
- Best angle
- Best angle: Tight shots of the surviving tile fragments on the upper walls and around the arches beat any attempt at a full facade, because most of the cladding is gone. From the north-east corner you get the dome and two walls in one frame. Inside, the painted plaster in the chambers is best shot straight-on with a wide lens in available light โ flash is usually prohibited and the interiors are dim.

Styling Zari Zardozi Embroidery in Agra
Zari Zardozi Embroidery is a traditional wear favourite in Agra, and looks its best in gold, silver, deep maroon, emerald and royal blue., worn with mojari or jutti.
Comfort is medium, so plan your route accordingly. You can buy or rent it around kinari bazaar (the specialist market) and sadar bazaar for finished garments from about โน200 / metre for borders; โน1,500โ25,000 for garments. Check the photo spots above for the best time and angle to capture the look.
Zari Zardozi
Zardozi is heavy embroidery worked in metal thread โ historically real gold and silver wire, today usually tested metallic yarn wound on a silk core โ on silk, satin or velvet, often with sequins, beads and small stones added. It is the most formal and most expensive of India's embroidery traditions, and it was Mughal court work: the same craft that produced imperial robes, canopies, horse trappings and tent walls produced the sherwanis and lehengas sold in Agra today.
Why Agra
Agra was the Mughal capital, and the crafts that served the court stayed. The city's embroidery market is called Kinari Bazaar โ kinari means a border or trim โ and the name is literal: the lanes behind Jama Masjid sell the decorative edges that go onto clothes. It is still a working trade rather than a souvenir performance, which is why the prices are better there than anywhere near the Taj.
What to buy
- Zari border by the metre โ from about โน200 a metre for a simple border to several thousand for dense hand work. The best souvenir there is, because it is light, cheap, unmistakably Agra, and you can have it sewn onto anything at home.
- An embroidered dupatta or shawl โ โน1,500โ8,000.
- A lehenga panel or wedding fabric โ the real use of this craft, and โน8,000โ25,000+.
- A sherwani with zardozi on the placket and cuffs โ the classic menswear buy.
- Embroidered potli bags, cushion covers and wall hangings.
How to tell hand work from machine
This is the whole skill of buying zardozi, and it is easy once you know what to look for:
- Turn it over. Hand zardozi has a messy reverse โ visible thread carries, knots, cut ends and the outline of the pattern showing through. Machine embroidery has a clean, almost identical reverse. A neat back means a machine.
- Look for irregularity. Hand work varies: stitches are slightly different lengths, curves are not perfectly smooth, and the density shifts. Machine work is metronomic.
- Check the thread. Real zari has a metallic yarn wound around a silk or cotton core and feels supple. Cheap imitation is a stiff plastic-coated wire that cracks when folded. Fold a corner gently โ if the metallic layer cracks or flakes, it is plastic.
- Weigh it. Genuine dense zardozi is heavy. Machine 'zardozi' on a lightweight base feels like nothing.
- Ask what the thread is. A real trader knows and will tell you. Someone who cannot answer is selling machine work.
Where to buy
Kinari Bazaar, behind Jama Masjid โ the specialist market, and the correct answer. Closed on Tuesdays, roughly 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, so plan around that. Sadar Bazaar for finished garments with embroidery already applied. Shilpgram near the Taj East Gate for a curated version at higher prices if you do not want to negotiate.
Haggle 20โ40% off the first quote, and more if you buy several lengths from one shop or pay cash. Zari is sold by weight and length, so the price is negotiable in a way that a fixed-price boutique item is not.
Having something made
Kinari Bazaar's tailors will make a garment from fabric and border bought in the same lanes in two to four days. This is the best-value way to own real Agra zardozi: you choose the cloth, choose the border, and pay for labour separately, which comes to far less than a finished equivalent. Get measured properly, agree the total in writing, leave a deposit rather than full payment, and collect in person.
Care
Dry clean only. Metal thread tarnishes and can be damaged by water and detergent. Store flat wrapped in cotton or muslin, never in plastic โ plastic traps moisture and accelerates tarnishing. Keep it away from perfume and from direct sunlight.
