Old Konkan, on a hillside
Prachin Konkan is an open-air museum on a wooded slope, a short walk from the Ganpatipule bus stand. It was set up in 2004 to show how people on this coast lived a few centuries ago. Instead of glass cases, you walk through scenes built on the hillside, with life-size figures at work among real trees.
What you see
The path passes tiled village houses and scenes of fishing, farming and village trades. Others show local gods, festivals and the tools of daily life. A section on Shivaji Maharaj covers moments from Maratha history, and there are models of the sea forts that guarded this coast. A small garden is laid out by the nakshatras, the lunar star signs.
Guided walks
Visits are guided. Staff lead groups along the path and explain each scene as you go. The walk is ticketed, and some visitors report a separate charge for cameras. Allow about an hour. The paths are sloping and uneven in places, so wear comfortable shoes.
Why it is worth an hour
The museum explains a lot of what you see on the drive to Jaigad or Aare-Ware: the red laterite houses, the fishing boats, the mango and coconut orchards. It works well for families, as children like the life-size scenes. A shop at the exit sells wooden toys and handicrafts, including Sawantwadi painted wooden pieces.
When to go
It is open most of the day, usually from the morning to about 6 pm. Go in the morning, when it is cooler under the trees, or combine it with the temple and a late walk on the beach.
