Gokarna

A laid-back temple-and-beach town on the Karnataka coast — a sacred Shiva pilgrimage centre fringed by a string of pristine, cliff-linked beaches.

Gokarna blends piety and the sea: the Mahabaleshwar Shiva temple and its Atmalinga, palm-backed Om and Kudle beaches, beach-trek coves, and Konkani coastal food.

About Gokarna

Gokarna is a small temple town on the Uttara Kannada coast of Karnataka, where the Aghanashini river meets the Arabian Sea. For Hindu pilgrims it is one of the holiest Shiva towns in South India, built around the Mahabaleshwar Temple and its Atmalinga. For most other visitors it is the gateway to a string of beaches cut off from each other by laterite cliffs: Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise.

The two sides of Gokarna sit about a short walk apart. Car Street and the old town are for temple visits, the Koti Tirtha tank and a simple vegetarian thali, while the beaches south of town are for sunsets, café meals and the coastal walk that links them. Give yourself a morning in town, an afternoon on the cliff path and an evening on Kudle Beach, and add a half-day trip to Mirjan Fort near Kumta if you like old forts. Plan around the sea: the water here is rougher than it looks, and swimming is off-limits through the monsoon.

Questions

Gokarna — FAQ

What is Gokarna famous for?

Gokarna is famous for the Mahabaleshwar Temple, which holds the Atmalinga of Shiva, and for its beaches, especially Om Beach, shaped like the Om symbol, and Kudle Beach. It is also known for the coastal walk that links Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches.

How many days are enough for Gokarna?

2–3 days is enough for the temple and old town, the beach walk from Kudle to Half Moon, and sunsets on Kudle and Om. Add half a day if you want to visit Mirjan Fort.

What is the best time to visit Gokarna?

October to March is the best time, with dry weather and calmer seas. April and May are hot and humid, and from June to September heavy rain closes the sea to swimmers and many beach cafés shut. See the best time to visit Gokarna for a month-by-month guide.

How do I reach Gokarna?

The nearest big airport is Goa's Dabolim airport, about 140 km away, and the drive usually takes around 3–4 hours. By train, get off at Gokarna Road, Ankola or Kumta on the Konkan Railway and take a taxi or bus into town. Overnight buses also run from Bengaluru.

Is Gokarna a good place for families?

Yes. The town is small and calm, the temple and Car Street are easy to explore on foot, and Kudle and Om beaches have cafés and lifeguards in season. Keep children out of rough water, follow the flags on the beach, and choose the shorter walks rather than the full cliff trail with young kids.
